PM Thanks All Involved for Smooth and Orderly Water Festival

PHNOM PENH: For the first time in four years, Phnom Penh put on a full celebration of the Annual Water Festival, where dragon boats from each province race to gain glory for their hometowns. Millions of people descended on the capital city four a three-day celebration that included floating lanterns and boats decorated with lights at night, in addition to offerings to the moon for the change in weather and a plentiful harvest.

Prime Minister Hun Manet praised the organizing committee of Phnom Penh Capital Hall and all relevant ministries and institutions for their cooperation in organizing a smooth, safe and joyous Water Festival for the first time in four years.

Nearly 340 boats full of dozens of rowers entertained a crowd of millions, while over 30 illuminated boats representing different ministries, institutions and private companies floated along the river in front of the Royal Palace. Guests were treated to a fireworks display at the end of each night.

The Prime Minister and the First Lady were among many to celebrate the festivities, along with King Norodom Sihamoni, who presided over the opening and closing of the boat races.

The Prime Minister commended the racing committee and the athletes involved in the boat race for working hard to produce a race that adhered to the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect that made the event an overall success.

"I would also like to thank the ministries, institutions and private companies for participating in the preparation of beautiful lanterns with beauty and goodwill to display at night after the boat race ended each day. At the same time, the organization of many entertainment venues and concerts has made this event even more momentous and joyous for our people,” he said.

While millions attended the largest Water Festival celebration in Phnom Penh, celebrations attracted domestic and foreign tourists across the country, giving hope to the revival of Cambodian tourism.
